As part of our Geography unit we will be delving into Mapping the World: Countries, Capitals and Spatial Patterns? and asking: How do maps help us to understand the countries, cities and patterns of our world?

We’ll be asking:

  • How is the world organised into continents and countries??
  • How do the Equator, hemispheres, latitude and longitude help us locate places??
     
  • Why are capital cities important??
     
  • What patterns can we see in the world's major cities??
     
  • How accurate are the maps we use??
     
  • How do geographers use maps to identify patterns across the world??

In DT we will be creating a motorised vehicle. We will:

  • Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design.
  • Select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities
  • Evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work
  • Understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world

This term in maths we will be learning about place value and the four operations. We shall continue to use a mastery approach to teaching to develop our fluency, problem solving skills and reasoning, using a variety of pictorial, abstract and concrete resources. 

In English we shall be exploring the genre of a leaflets to persuade, poetry and instructions and descriptive setting writing linked to our class text Clockwork, by Phillip Pullman. Within each unit we shall explore text features in terms of structural and content devices pertinent to the genre as well as learning strands of grammar that link in. 

This term in science we will be looking at Living things and their habitats. Children will be asking:

  • How do scientists organise living things??
     
  • How are animals classified?
     
  • How are plants classified?
     
  • What are microorganisms?
     
  • How do microorganisms grow and spread?
     
  • How are microorganisms classified?


In PE we shall be taking part in swimming lessons on Wednesdays and football on Tuesdays.

I’m currently in the process of booking our educational visit to the Derby Museum of Making where we can hopefully take part in one of their engineering workshops which will link in brilliantly with our learning in DT. Full details will follow soon.
