All Governors are volunteers and at our school we have 3 types of Governor:
1: Parent Governors- Parent Governors are elected by the parents of children at the school, where only one parent applies then this parent will be accepted on to the governing body if there skill set is appropriate..
2: Staff Governors- Staff Governors are elected by the staff at the school.
3. Community Governors –representatives from the community. These may also be parents but also may have no connection with the school.
The Head teacher attends all Governing body meetings.
We ensure that our Governing body has a broad set of skills and each Governor is required to complete a skills audit. Each Governor has a linked teacher who they discuss particular curriculum areas with in their monitoring role. The Governors write a report on their allocated curriculum areas each year and monitor the action plans with their linked teacher.
The Governors are required to attend pertinent induction and training and are given training information on the schools own monitoring and assessment systems.
Our Governing body is active and scrutinises financial and curriculum developments, questioning and supporting the Head teacher in her day to day running of the school to ensure best practice, value for money and strategic planning.
Two members of the Governing body and the Head teacher are also on the board of directors of Willows Academy Trust.
All our Governors undertake induction training and safeguarding training. They also attend training to improve their knowledge in different areas including data analysis.
Welcome to our Governors’ section.
I have been a governor at Shardlow Primary School for over 10 years, Chair of Governors for the past 7 years and am currently a Director of Willows Academy Trust. I have also been a magistrate since 1999 sitting in both adult and youth courts as a bench chair.
My background is in accountancy, helping my husband in his practice and , for many years running my own business completing VAT returns for clients. I am now retired which means that I can give as much time as is required to the school.
I am a Parent Governor. I became a Governor a few months ago as I have two children currently attending the school and I wanted to become more involved in the management of the school. My background is in Business – I have an MSc in Supply Chain Management and a Degree in Business Studies and I am a Supply Chain Manager at JJ Churchill Ltd. I have also worked in Purchasing at JCB for ten years and at Rolls-Royce for five years. I hope to use my skills and experience to the benefit of the school and I recently became Chair of the Resource Committee to enable me to do so.
I have lived in Shardlow for 42 years, married to a Farmer and partner in the business. I trained as a Home Economics Teacher, taught in Buxton until I got married. My three children attended Shardlow School and now I have 3 Grandchildren who also attend, making them the third generation to attend the school.
I obtained an Open University degree in Social Studies in the 1980s.
I am currently Vice Chair of Governors and Chair of Children and Learning sub-committee. I have been a Parish Councillor for over 30 years serving 2 terms as Chair. Currently I am the Parish Council's representative on School Governors and this is my 5th year as a Governor.
On the Parish Council I sit on 2 Quarry liaison committees.
I am very much involved with Derbyshire Federation of WIs, having previously been its Chair for 3 years and have served on a NFWI sub-committee for 3 years. Currently I teach twice a month; Preservation classes for adults and give cookery demonstrations to voluntary groups throughout Derbyshire.
The skills and attributes I bring to the Governors include a knowledge of the education system; a wide range of knowledge of the village and the school’s stakeholders; experience of committees and a love of learning.
