Art
Our art curriculum provides an opportunity for all children to learn the knowledge and skills required to flourish in art. It encourages children to engage with and discover an interest in art as well as widen their vocabulary and use of technical language. It provides dedicated time for all children to access the art curriculum and ensure that learning is progressive so that children can build on the knowledge and skills they have previously learned.
Each strand of the art curriculum is mapped out to ensure specific knowledge and skills are taught during each unit.
Pupils' learning is recorded using sketch books which they take with them through each year Shardlow, providing each child with a learning journey. Children complete 3 units of learning each academic year. These projects provide coverage over the two yearly cycle and include a knowledge organiser to help children build schema. All children are supported in accessing their learning in art. Teachers consider the needs of all learners and provide the tools to ensure that all pupils can access the learning material. The art curriculum reflects the school ethos, encouraging children to become independent, motivated, confident, respectful, responsible and open-minded learners.
At Shardlow Primary School:
- Children will successfully compare, critique, build skills, create and evaluate across different elements: line, shape, form, colour, space, texture and value.
- Pupils use their knowledge and skills to create a piece of artwork in the style of an existing artist. They are able to reflect on their work.
- Children express their own creativity through their artwork and feel confident to share their work.
- Pupils are well prepared for the next stage of learning in each strand of the art curriculum.
- Children enjoy art lessons and show a curiosity for further lessons. Children understand the impact of art in the wider world and want to develop their skills further.
