Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
At Shardlow Primary School, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.
At Shardlow we:
- help children to understand their emotions and feelings better
- help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
- help children socially to form and maintain relationships
- promote self esteem and ensure children know that they count
- encourage children to be confident and ‘dare to be different’
- help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks
At Shardlow Primary School we offer the following levels of support:
Universal Support- To meet the needs of all our pupils through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum.
Additional support- For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.
Targeted support- For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as wellbeing groups.

Teaching about Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
The skills, knowledge and understanding needed by our pupils to keep themselves mentally healthy and safe are included as part of our PSHE scheme of work PHSE Matters, developed by Derbyshire Health and Wellbeing Consultants. Lessons are taught weekly in a safe and sensitive manner. Additional lessons are sometimes planned, in response to the specific needs of the class/cohort.
In Trent Class children follow the PSED strand of the Curriculum and also use the Derbyshire approved PSHE Matters scheme of work.
In addition, Assembly themes are delivered throughout the year with a focus on promoting emotional wellbeing.
Worry monsters are established in all classrooms in Trent and Derwent Class. Whilst our Key Stage 2 children have access to a more discreet worry box which is located in our library.
