Design and Technology
Design and Technology at Shardlow Primary School
We intend to...
- Provide an opportunity for all children to learn the knowledge and skills required to be a successful designer.
- Encourage children to engage with and discover an interest for design and technology.
- Widen children’s vocabulary and use of technical language.
- Provide dedicated time for all children to access the Design and Technology curriculum and an opportunity to be creative.
- Ensure that the curriculum is progressive so that children can develop on the knowledge and skills they have previously learned.
What does this look like?
- Each strand of the D&T curriculum is mapped out to ensure specific knowledge and skills are taught during each unit.
- The subject map is progressive across each strand of the D&T curriculum, ensuring pupils build on the knowledge and skills acquired in previous units.
- Pupils learning is recorded in a ‘booklet’, allowing the children to explore the design criteria, explore and evaluate existing products, design and evaluate products.
- Children complete 3 projects each academic year. These projects usually link with their topic and Literacy text to drive the product, purpose and user.
- All children are supported in accessing their learning in D&T. Teachers consider the needs of all learners and provide the tools to ensure that all pupils can access the learning material.
- The D&T curriculum reflects the school ethos, encouraging children to become independent, motivated, confident, respectful, responsible and open-minded learners.
