Phonics and reading schemes



At Shardlow we work extremely hard to ensure our teaching and learning in Phonics is consistent, engaging and progressive. Based on the principles of Read Write Inc., our daily lessons ensure that the children develop the skills they need to be able to read with fluency, whilst developing a love of reading.


The children in Reception start their Phonics journey as soon as they start school and continue their learning into Year 1. Lessons are taught in small, targeted groups and are packed full of reading and writing opportunities! Teachers are continually assessing the children's knowledge and timely interventions can take place according to their needs.




EYFS & Key Stage 1

  • Decodable reading books are closely matched to the ‘set’ of phonics sounds that children are learning in EYFS and KS1.
  • The books follow a colour order, increasing in difficulty as they progress through the book bands.
  • Our decodable reading books come from the Oxford Reading Tree spine.
  • Bug Club is also used as an online tool to engage children in reading in school and at home.


Key Stage 2

  • In Key Stage 2, children move onto our Accelerated Reader scheme.
  • Pupils in Year 2 may move onto Accelerated Reader if they are reading fluently. The fluency of reading is assessed by school staff. Pupils in Key Stage 2 who are not reading fluently may remain on earlier reading schemes if deemed appropriate by the class teacher.


Please note that teachers continually assess children’s reading in school and use this information to determine when each child is ready to move on in their reading.
