Phonics and reading schemes
Phonics
At Shardlow Primary School we use the DfE validated Phonics scheme ‘Read Write Inc’ (RWI). At Shardlow, we endeavour to create a genuine love of reading amongst the children, whilst developing the skills they need to become confident, fluent readers.
The children’s Phonics journey starts from the very beginning of the Reception year. Children are assessed every half term and are placed into targeted groups for daily lessons. Every day the children will access a ‘Speed Sounds’ lesson, ‘Storybook’ lesson and a ‘Get Writing’ session.
Reading
EYFS & Key Stage 1
- Children take home a 'Book Bag Book' (from RWI).
- These books are fully decodable and are given out in line with the 'set' of Phonics sounds and the storybook the child has learnt at school.
- Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 also have a weekly 'Share a Story' book to read for pleasure.
Key Stage 2
- In Key Stage 2, children move onto our Accelerated Reader scheme.
- Pupils in Year 2 may move onto Accelerated Reader if they are reading fluently. The fluency of reading is assessed by school staff. Pupils in Key Stage 2 who are not reading fluently may remain on earlier reading schemes if deemed appropriate by the class teacher.
Please note that teachers continually assess children’s reading in school and use this information to determine when each child is ready to move on in their reading.
