First Farmer's Market
Fri 03 Oct 2014Today we had our first ever Farmer's Market!
The Junior Leadership Team were brilliant at helping set up and run many of the stalls, including our own school stall, which was selling produce from our allotment. We had lots of local companies who also had stalls and the children had an opportunity to see the wide variety of products that can come from a farm, such as woollen scarves, pies, cakes, flour, meats, eggs and so on.
Overall we raised around £190, which will go towards our cooking and gardening activities, so a big thank you to everyone who came and contributed! We would also like to thank the Friends of Shardlow for running the refreshment stall and all the volunteers who helped set up and pack away, we couldn't have done it without you!
Our next Food for Life event is next week (Wednesday 8th October), where we will be holding a cooking curriculum evening for both parents and children to explore a range of recipes and cooking skills!

Cross Country
Tue 30 Sep 2014We had a fantastic start to the new sporting year at Shardlow with our Intra-school Cross Country competition today!
All the children took part and were competing for vital points for their house teams, as well as a potential place in the Erewash Cross Country competition, which is coming up in November.
The children were brilliant at supporting one another and all showed great motivation and determination! We had three podium winners from each class, as well as a spirit reward for those children who tried especially hard or showed excellent sportsmanship!
Well done to everyone who took part and especially to Green team, who were today's house winners! A huge thank you as well to Mrs Gillard who worked alongside our Sports Ambassadors to help organise and set up the event, as well as keeping track of every vital point that was scored!

Derbyshire Sports Awards
Thu 18 Sep 2014Following our great success at the Erewash Sports Awards in July, tonight lots of schools, clubs and associations got together in Chesterfield for the Derbyshire Sports Awards and we at Shardlow were honoured to be represented at such a great event!
Our former young ambassadors were nominated for a young leader of the year award and although they didn't win, we were delighted that they were considered for nomination by the Erewash School Sports Partnership!
Former year 6 pupil Faye W, was also nominated for Disabled Performer of the year award and we were thrilled to hear her given a highly commended for her great efforts in both her swimming lessons and also at the Erewash Swimming Gala, where she helped contribute to our brilliant performance at the event!
We hope to see the great effort, performances and leadership skills continue in the coming year for Shardlow Sport and congratulate all the individuals and teams who were nominated for an award.

Mrs Smith Retires
Thu 18 Sep 2014Today we said goodbye and good luck to Mrs Smith, who has retired after 12 years of hard work at our school!
We have all enjoyed working with Mrs Smith over the years and all the lovely messages and memories that the children wrote showed just what a wonderful sense of fun and joy she has brought to the school.
We would like to take this opportunity to say a great big thank you for all her hard work and to wish her all the best in the future!

Jamie's Food Revolution Day
Fri 16 May 2014Today we took part in Food Revolution Day!
We had a live cooking session delivered online by Jamie Oliver, which involved making a delicious rainbow wrap. We used lots of lovely vegetables including beetroot, carrot and cabbage and also made a dressing using mustard powder, balsamic vinegar and oil. Jamie helped us with your grating skills and mixing skills and was accompanied by MC BBQ who gave us lots of exciting facts about the different vegetables!
Not only did it help to educate us about preparing and healthy, balance meals but we were also proud to have contributed to helping break a World Record!

Whirlow Farm Resdiential
Wed 16 Apr 2014This week our year 3 and 4 pupils returned from their 2 night residential trip to Whirlow Hall Farm and they had a fantastic time!
Whilst there the children had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities we built upon the work we have been doing towards our Food for Life project! They found out about where their food comes on the farm tour, took part in farm jobs with the farmers such as preparing the animal feed, collecting eggs, grooming the animals and cleaning the different animal homes, they orienteered their way around the fields learning about the different crops as they went, collected seed packs in the hall gardens and planted some herbs to bring back to school, had the opportunity to ride a pony, as well as prepared and cooked every single meal including breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and snacks!
As well as building on their knowledge of farms and farming the children also had the opportunity to develop aspects of their social, moral and cultural awareness! For some pupils it was the first time they had been away from home and for others it was the first time they had shared a bedroom or washed the pots! They had to take responsibility for their belongings and ensure they have everything they needed for the next activity, as well as working together as team and supporting each other and they did brilliantly!
Throughout the trip the children behaved impeccably well and were a credit to the school. They followed instructions carefully and listened attentively to the instructors and adults. One instructor commented that the group were one of the best groups she had worked with; participating with great enthusiasm, showing excellent subject knowledge and asking such thoughtful questions!
We kept parents up to date throughout the trip through our twitter page @Shardlowprimary and you can still find the updates on there now or check out our photos below!
We can't wait to start our farm topic after the Easter holidays and after this trip we are even more certain its going to be a great success!
